Albert Lea, MN Real Estate

Albert Lea is a mixed-use commercial, residential and industrial area located about 90 miles south of the Twin Cities, accessed via Interstate Highway 90 and 35W. Surrounded by several lakes: Fountain Lake, Pickerel Lake, Albert Lea Lake, Goose Lake, School Lake, and Lake Chapeau, and situated near Helmer Myre State Park, this small metropolitan area is a summer weekend destination and a nice community in which to live.

The City is named after Albert Miller Lea, a topographer with the United States Dragoons that surveyed southern Minnesota and northern Iowa in 1835. Albert Lea's earliest industry was agriculture, farming support services and manufacturing. At one time it was home agriculture industry giant Cargill. Other manufacturing included Edwards Manufacturing, Scotsman Ice Machines, Streater Store fixtures, and Universal Milking Machines.

Like many Minnesota towns, much of the manufacturing base has diminished as the city progresses towards more service and hospitality-oriented businesses. The largest employer today is Albert Lea Medical Center/Mayo, employing over 1,500 residents of Albert Lea and neighboring communities. Additional employment opportunities are on the horizon as Albert Lea is actively seeking businesses to relocate to their City with the developments of a 70-acre industrial park in progress and another swatch of 80 acres at the Interstate 35 and 90 interchange zoned for business or industrial use sitting vacant.

Besides the large employment base for its residents and local municipal airport, Albert Lea contains abundant natural and historic areas comprising over 300 acres of parks, recreation areas, and open space. There are 41 parks and recreation areas offering playfields, playground equipment, basketball courts, tennis courts, fishing areas, natural open spaces, picnic areas, ball fields, a swimming pool and aquatic center, a civic theatre, a senior center, and an ice arena.

Albert Lea offers a range of single and multi-family housing options, including condos and town homes. Standard styles include ramblers, prairie flats, split and multi-levels as well as some "vintage" turn-of-the-century dwellings like traditional farmhouses replete with red barn, acreage and out buildings. Some areas are more clustered, while further out (but not too far out) one can find several acres of property on which to settle and enjoy some solitude.
