Arden Hills, MN Real Estate

In 1850 Charles Perry broke ground on three acres of land adjacent to Lake Johanna, planted some potatoes and became the first settler to the area now known as Arden Hills. Arden Hills was named for the hobby farm built by millionaire state senator Joseph Hackney; the farm was named Arden Farm.

The Ammunitions plant that occupies the northern one-third of the city was erected in the early 1940s and at its peak of production during World War II employed 26,000 people. The site is no longer in use and efforts have been made to clean up the surrounding land and donate it back to the park reserve system. In 1951, the city of Arden Hills incorporated in response to annexation requests by the city of New Brighton. Three residential areas and the ammunition site were to become what is now known as Arden Hills.

Arden Hills is located just 12 miles northeast of Minneapolis on Interstate 35W and 694, offering easy access to Minneapolis proper as well as all the northern suburbs and full public transit (bus) service. Tucked away in the southwest corner of Arden Hills is Bethel University and Seminary, so while there is a student presence in the makeup of the city, everyone exists very cohesively and the area is generally quite family-friendly and even upscale, especially the neighborhoods around Lake Josephine and Lake Johanna. Here, you'll find some very stylish housing options, from modern design to overgrown ramblers and even "luxury" farmhouses, homes with the look and appeal of a farmhouse with all the fine touches.

More modest ramblers, split and multi-level homes are settled in among well-established neighborhoods. The city boasts 13 neighborhood and city parks covering over 100 acres of land and providing residents with access to basketball and tennis courts, ball fields, picnic shelters and scenic trails for biking and running. A natural park reserve spans 12.5 acres and is perfect for photography, running and hiking or just appreciating the natural surroundings on that first lovely spring afternoon of the season when you should be at work.

Another unique feature of this community is its oddly inviting public library! While many people might resist going to the library to read or study (we'd much rather relax in a coffee shop or outside under a shade tree), the Arden Hills Public Library might just change your mind. Located in a natural setting with beautiful views of the wetlands as well as a birder's nook and Osprey nesting platform, you just might pass up that cup of joe for the opportunity to spend some time in this unique and cozy space. Area shopping is bountiful in the form of strip malls, usually bookended with a Super Target and Cub Foods, with an array of smaller chain venues and convenience food franchises laid out in between. Treat yourself to a fine dining experience at Kozlaks Royal Oak Restaurant in nearby Shoreview.
