Becker, MN Real Estate

The city of Becker is located about 47 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, a drive up Interstate Highway 94. Becker was incorporated in 1904, and so-named after the Mayor of St. Paul, George Loomis Becker. The construction of the railroad station in 1867 brought numerous settlers to the area, many of Scandinavian descent. Additional development of the growing community included a hay press, general stores and electrical lines. Following incorporation around 1900, the business district along Hancock Street was established with institutions such as the township school, banks, and churches.

Becker continued to be an agricultural area that produced wheat, oats, corn, and potatoes. Becker's recent history includes the building of a four-lane highway that caused traffic to bypass Becker. In 1972, the city agreed to terms with Sherburne County and Xcel Energy to establish the Sherco (Sherburne County) plant-a coal-fired electric generating facility that opened in 1976. The $374-million project quickly paid off as the tax base that was created by the facility allowed for the development of schools, the community center, and a championship golf course. The City went on to annex six sections of land increasing the City's total acreage from 920 to 5,063 acres.

Today, Becker maintains a base of light and heavy industrial facilities including Sherco and the second largest industrial facility established in 1995, Liberty Paper. Building upon this base is a thriving business and commercial sect, of whom all Minnesota residents would name "Becker Furniture World" to be the most well-recognized figure. This home furnishings retail complex spans 300,000 square feet and includes a 4,300 square foot "idea house" inside. The store/showroom has definitely put Becker on the map.

Becker is located within 60 miles of eight Universities and Colleges, including the University of Minnesota, St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict (St. Joseph, MN), and St. Cloud State University.

Becker features eight parks for sports, recreation and relaxing, including the 100-acre City Park, and the growing senior population can take advantage of an active senior community and assisted living and senior communities. Pebble Creek Golf Club is a four-star course, uniquely designed 27-hole that offers practice facilities, pro shop and golf instruction.

There are currently seven active housing developments in the City of Becker. These newer areas comprise subdivisions of ramblers and multi-levels, condos and town homes. Due to the Sherco facility, Becker residents enjoy some of the lowest taxes in the state, affording an established family an opportunity to move to an upscale home that otherwise might not be an option in a another city or a young family, just starting out, to attain a very nice starter home. With the continued sprawl of the Twin Cities area, Becker will certainly continue to grow into the future and become "closer" to the Twin Cities than ever before.
