Belle Plaine, MN Real Estate

Located about 43 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, Belle Plaine is a small, but growing community situated in the Minnesota River Valley and along the Highway 169 corridor. In 1853, Minnesota Territorial Judge Andrew G. Chatfield selected this town site while traveling on horseback from Mendota to Traverse des Sioux to hold court. Chatfield named the site Belle Plaine, french for "beautiful prairie."

Today, the cozy, family-centered community features wide, tree-lined streets and plenty of open space. Belle Plaine serves as the southwest gateway to the seven-county metro area. The community is moving progressively forward with an excellent school system, recreational opportunities, strong community leadership and a growing economic base. The area is also part of the rich "horse country" that characterizes many southwestern rural suburb communities such as Jordan, New Prague, Prior Lake, Lakeville and Savage.

For the outdoor enthusiast, the nearby Minnesota River Valley State Park offers miles of extensive and well-maintained biking, hiking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and horseback riding trails. Area camping is available with dozens of scenic camp sites nearby and fishing readily available at either the several nearby lakes or the Minnesota River. In town, there are six community parks featuring play equipment, ball fields and picnic areas.

Downtown features eating and entertainment establishments, retail stores and service businesses. Closest mall and big box shopping is probably located at Eden Prairie Center or Burnsville Center and the surrounding areas. Some other interesting things to do around town include the annual community cookout taking place in Downtown, providing an opportunity for businesses to highlight their services and provide family-fun for people of all ages. Also Downtown, view a six-wall, 1,342 square foot hand painted mural depicts Belle Plaine's history between 1870 and 1917.

Housing includes mostly single-family units, some preserved homes from the late 1800's located in neighborhoods within convenient walking distance to the downtown area, schools and parks, as well as more upscale models in newer subdivisions: ramblers and multi-levels. There are also a few condos and town homes in the area. This would be a quiet community, potentially conducive for a family or an older couple looking to escape the bustle.
