Big Lake, MN Real EstateBig Lake is located about 40 miles northwest of the Twin Cities near Monticello and Elk River, situated beside beautiful Big Lake and Lake Mitchell. Big Lake recently garnered the position of the northern-most stop along the Northstar Commuter Rail line, to be completed in 2009. The service will provide access from Big Lake to Minneapolis, stopping in Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids, and connecting to the existing Metro Transit lite rail. The development implications of this project are significant to the community as it will provide transit-oriented development, additional jobs and community investment. For the residents, the new rail means additional lifestyle opportunities with the incentive to develop town homes, apartments and more single family homes for the increased and more diverse population expected to be brought to the community by the lure of mass public transit and a quick link to the Twin Cities. Conversely, it's an opportunity to re-develop the community's historic industry: recreation and tourism, by making Big Lake a destination for day and weekend trips for city dwellers. Besides the proposed development accompanying the new commuter train, Big Lake has increased their industrial base with the development of several new industrial parks in recent years. Big Lake is known locally for its annual summer festival "Spud Fest," celebrating all things potato-related. It's known for its large softball tournament, attracting teams from all over the state. Other activities include a carnival, parade, Bingo, live music, pork dinner, hot air balloon rides, fireworks, potato pancake breakfast, 8K run, and "pot-o-spuds" cook off. This is a dynamic and growing community that will be seeing a lot of change in the next several years and with careful planning, is on track to becoming one of the Twin Cities' powerhouse suburbs.
