Bloomington, MN Real Estate

As a large, first ring suburb of Minneapolis, Bloomington enjoys a shared identity with the city as well as a booming hospitality industry, boasting more hotels than any other city in the state in order to provide visitors with access to Downtown Minneapolis as well as The Mall of America, Waterpark of America and the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.

The city is largely divided by 35W that runs, more or less, down the middle. Residents of Bloomington identify themselves as either from West Bloomington or East Bloomington. Kids in West Bloomington attend Thomas Jefferson High School. This neighborhood is the more residential and upscale of the two.

Many homes are situated on winding boulevards and cul-de-sacs near the Hyland-Bush-Anderson Lakes Parks areas and most of the recent housing development is taking place on this side of town; you'll find everything from new, luxury town home developments to bon a fide mansions looking out on the Minnesota River. The kids in East Bloomington attend Kennedy High school and the area includes more industry and retail than her counterpart. This area is more reminiscent of South Minneapolis or Richfield, laid out in a grid pattern with the cozier rambler-style or split level homes.

Whether from East or West Bloomington, it's apparent that recreation and entertainment options abound in and around the city. For the family and the unattached there's the Mall of America. As a local, you'll start to earn a discerning eye for tourists; they usually reveal themselves by wearing fannypacks, standing on the escalators (as opposed to walking), strolling slowly down the center of the wide corridors, and a general "mouth agape" look on their faces. More cultural offerings include the Bloomington Center for the Arts where you can peruse a gallery, take a pottery class or enjoy a live theater performance.

The Bloomington Ice Garden boasts three rinks, one Olympic sized; Bloomington is locally recognized as a hockey town with both high schools regularly sending hockey teams to state championship games. If all of this is a little higher octane than you prefer, step down to the Minnesota Valley Park Reserve for hiking and snowshoeing, nature walks, and environmental education. Or, find Hyland Park-a preserve that offers miles of paved and natural running paths, bike paths, cross-country skiing, visitor center, "Chutes and Ladders" play area, picnic areas, beaches, downhill ski and snowboard runs, and the Bloomington Ski Jumps adjacent.

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: Chez Daniel Bistro-rich and scrumptious; Kincaids Fish, Chop and Steakhouse-way-up scale dining; Tandoor Indian Restaurant-don't let the dingy location fool you, once inside you're just minutes away from a fantastic dining experience!

Area Shopping: Mall of America; Southtown Shopping Center (strip mall); nearby Southdale Mall and Galleria (Edina).

Around Town: Mall of America; free snowshoe rental at the Minnesota Valley Park Reserve; stroll picturesque Normandale Lake on a warm afternoon and come back at night for awesome fourth of July fireworks display; hit up Minnesota Valley Country Club for challenging game of golf and a pint at the clubhouse.
