Brainerd, MN Real Estate

Brainerd is located approximately 132 miles from the Twin Cities metro area and is brimming with history and lore. Originally Ojibwe territory, white settlers first arrived to the area on Christmas Day, 1805, when Zebulon Pike stopped while searching for the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Brainerd was essentially developed by the Northern Pacific railroad. President John Gregory Smith, who in named the township after his wife, Anne Eliza Brainerd Smith. The company built a bridge over the Mississippi seven miles north of Crow Wing Village and used the Brainerd station as a machine and car shop. Brainerd became a city in 1873.

In 1881, the railroad expanded and brought the city along with it. Lumber and paper, as well as agriculture, were important early industries, but for many decades Brainerd remained a railroad town. In the 1920s roughly 90 percent of Brainerd residents were dependent on the railroad for their livelihoods. The Northwest Paper Company built Brainerd's first paper mill in 1903 and with the steady increase in tourism since the early 1900s the paper and service industries have become Brainerd's primary employers.

Today, Brainerd is a well-developed commercial and residential area, with most new construction in the area taking place in neighboring Baxter. Brainerd operates a thriving resort industry in the warm months owing to its abundance of natural resources such as Pelican Lake, Edward Lake, North Long Lake and Gull Lake, some of which they share with neighboring communities Nisswa, Breezy Point and East Gull Lake.

Enjoy a wide variety of options when considering Brainerd for relocation, ranging from upscale lakeside townhouses to new residential developments, starter homes and hobby farms. Brainerd is a nice, low-key community in which to raise an active family with an appreciation for the outdoors.
