Brooklyn Park became a city in 1969, and was so-named by a group of settlers from Michigan that wanted to name the new township after their hometown, Brooklyn, Michigan. Historically a potato-farming community, Brooklyn Park still celebrates the majestic spud with its annual "Tater Dayz" festival each summer that includes a parade, carnival, couch potato contest, 5K Spud Run, fireworks display and battle of the bands.

The main drags in Brooklyn Park are County Road 81, Highway 152, and Interstates 694 and 94. The city is located only about 10 miles northwest of Downtown Minneapolis, making it easily accessible for entertainment, retail and work. Additionally, Minnesota based Target Corporation with headquarters in Downtown Minneapolis, has been in talks with Brooklyn Park for a couple of years regarding the possibility of building an expansion headquarters to house over 16,000 Target employees and create an additional 10,000 jobs in the area due to the building and construction, dining, retail and entertainment industries that the company would undoubtedly bring with it.

While a Target headquarters would secure Brooklyn Park's place on the map, residents would tell you that the community already has a solid, family-friendly identity, even as they seek forgiveness from Minnesota at-large for giving former governor Jesse Ventura his start in politics as mayor of their city from 1990 to 1995. Brooklyn Park offers plenty of kid and family-friendly programming from community education courses in art, music, and fitness and sports, to the Grand Rios indoor water park, one of many recently added luxury, indoor water parks to the area, or Brunswick Zone--an indoor recreation facility that houses bowling, billiards, laser tag and a video arcade.

The city is senior-friendly, and recognizes the unique needs of an aging population with several senior living options including lovely senior town home communities to assisted living facilities, and a Senior Center that organizes games, clubs and activities. Since Brooklyn Park is a more well-established community than many of her neighbors to the northwest, the city celebrates a better mix of cultural and ethnic diversity with a Cinco De Mayo celebration and a diversity awareness day to recognize the "many faces" of Brooklyn Park and provide education on the different backgrounds.

For the more active family or individual, there are over 1,900 acres of parks, 67 local park areas and miles of biking and running trails. The North Hennepin Regional Trail, stretching from Maple Grove to Coon Rapids passes through, other options are Brookdale Park and Palmer Lake Environmental Area. Coon Rapids Dam Park is a great place for cross-country skiing, hiking and biking; or tee off at the challenging Edinburgh Golf Course-a nationally acclaimed site. Brooklyn Park is another strip mall and fast food mecca, but some upscale cuisine options can be found at MacTavish's Restaurant at Edinburgh Golf Course. Homes in Brooklyn Park consist of cozy single-family ramblers and split levels situated in quaint and diverse neighborhoods.
