Chisago City, MN Real Estate

The four cities of Chisago City, Center City, Lindstrom and Shafer comprise the Chisago Lakes area and are the hub of Swedish culture in Minnesota-you bet cha! All four cities have "sister" cities in Sweden and were settled in the mid-1800s by Swedish immigrants. Originally, the land was inhabited by Chippewa Indians, whose phrase "ki chi saga" means "fair and lovely waters." Chisago City was a major resort area after the railroads came through in the 1880s. Center City was the first permanent Swedish settlement in Minnesota and is probably best-known today as home to Hazelden, the addiction treatment facility that pioneered a model of care that is now the most widely used in the world.

Lindstrom is the largest city in the quartet, and the last city to be platted and formed-one unique feature about Lindstrom is its water tower, which looks like a traditional Swedish teakettle! Shafer was once a potato hub and remains a farming community today; one of the city's most prominent residents is Eichten's Hidden Acres. Eichten's is a well-known farmer's market vendor, frequenting many locations around the Twin Cities and specializing in cheeses and bison meat. Each year they invite the communities to the farm and hold a "Buffalo Stampede" that features traditional Native American dancing, food and festivities. Each city is situated around a common chain of lakes that includes Center Lake, Lindstrom, Kroon, Green and Sunrise Lake.

Due to the vast amounts of open water, one can expect fishing, canoeing, skiing, and sailing on the seven larger area lakes, as well as swimming beaches, biking and running trails and picnic areas to sit and take in the scenery. Snowmobiling and ice fishing are popular winter time activities as is downhill skiing, located less than thirty minutes away at Wild Mountain or Trollhaugen.

The cities also celebrate a winter festival that includes hot air balloon launches, ice fishing contest, ice races and a medallion hunt. The Chisago Lakes area is located 40 to 50 miles from the Twin Cities, which effectively removes them from "suburb" status but some commercial retail and dining can be found in nearby Forest Lake, and some work is being done to expand industry in Chisago City. The cities themselves feature mostly traditional family or "bar and grill" types of restaurants.

Homes on the fringes of the cities tend to be older farm houses from the early 1900s or even late 1800s; you can even buy an operational farm or horse stable if you want to fulfill that lifelong dream. Homes around the lakes tend to be newer and grander with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out, expansive decks and your own piece of shoreline. There are also some subdivisions where you can find a new walk-out rambler or town house. This is a lovely little community to raise a family, with plenty of cultural awareness, respect of their history and heritage, and community events and recreation.
