Columbia Heights, MN Real Estate

Columbia Heights is a first-ring suburb located just six miles north of downtown Minneapolis, along the Mississippi River. The Village of Columbia Heights was formed by Polish-American farmers on March 14, 1898 when it separated from Fridley Township. As its name might suggest, Columbia Heights has a hilly terrain and features the highest point in Hennepin, Ramsey, and Anoka Counties at 47th Avenue NE & Stinson Blvd. and has become a natural outgrowth of Minneapolis.

Columbia Heights is a primarily residential community with some commercial and retail centers as some office space. The city maintains 13 parks located mostly in low-lying areas that include several lakes and ponds, ball fields, play structures, picnic areas, a beach, wading pools, basketball and tennis courts, running and biking trails or take advantage of the paths along East River Road on the Mississippi.

The community hosts city-wide events such as the Heights Jamboree, an annual festival and carnival including fireworks and a softball tournament. There are also many special events, classes and trips available to seniors with the community Senior Center, and cultural and education enrichment opportunities for people of all ages with Columbia Heights community education programs. Youth and adults take advantage of year-round sports leagues offered by the City.

Columbia Heights is home to the Heights Theater, a plethora of fast food establishments, and Twin City Comics. You might recognize Columbia Heights, the Heights Jamboree, Hylander, and other such references to the city and Minnesota in Pat Proft's 1998 film Wrongfully Accused.

Columbia Heights contains multiple and single-family homes, town homes, and post-World War II ramblers in settled neighborhoods. This is a generally more modest community with less glitz and glamour than those some neighboring areas. This area is well-served by public transportation to both Minneapolis and St. Paul downtowns, as well as being close enough to take advantage of the vast entertainment and dining options available in the larger cities. This is a nice place to raise a family and a young professional might also find it a nice location in keeping him/her within the metro area at an affordable price.
