Coon Rapids is a suburb of Minneapolis, located about 14 miles north of the city. Originally named "Coon Creek," agriculture was the first industry to the area. A brickyard was the next thing to come along-a remaining scar from that industry is still visible today and is known as the Clay Hole. Finally, in 1898, the Great Northern Development Company recognized the potential for power at the confluence of Coon Creek and the Mississippi River and a dam was constructed. When finally a comlpeted in 1914, a busy and industrious community had sprung up, comprised of the hundreds of laborers and engineers who worked on the dam and the name of the city was changed to more accurately reflect the nature of the, now rapidly moving, Coon Creek.

Today, Coon Rapids is a suburb in the truest sense of the word; family-friendly, it's a planned community with a lot of fast and convenient dining and shopping options. Restaurants include the usual aray: Fuddruckers, Applebees, LeeAnn Chin, TGI Fridays, Doolittles, Bennigan's and the like. Riverdale Center offers wide variety of shopping including Costco, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, JC Penney, Kohls, Home Depot, Lowes and many small shops like Archivers. Northtown Mall in neighboring Coon Rapids includes the mall mainstays like Aeropostale, American Eagle, Bath & Body Works, Deb, Express, Gap, Hot Topic, PacSun, Ragstock, and an array of coffee shops and jewelers.

Coon Rapids also maintain an impressive business portfolio and is home to over 40 manufacturing firms, including manufacturers of medical instruments, aircraft parts, and electrical equipment. The City also includes a large amount of office and retail space in the Riverdale Business District. The city is presently in Phase III: Implementation and Ongoing Evaluation, of a 2030 development plan.

Outdoor recreation in the area manifests itself in Bunker Hills Park, with horseback riding trails, golf, archery, a pavillion, swimming beach and wave pool, playgounds and picnic areas. Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park includes some special features such as history tours of the dam and spectacular scenic overlooks of the river. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy the beautiful views and natural surroundings.

Homes in the area vary in size and price range, with the largest majority single-story ramblers and traditional multi-levels. The area is planning and developing new and family friendly subdivisions at a very fast rate. Many of these newer properties include large yards and are situated near community parks. There are also new town home and condo developments in progress.
