Cottage Grove, MN Real Estate

Early settlers arrived to the area along the Mississippi now known as "Cottage Grove" to find a prominent spread of oak forests and prairie grassland. Settlers turned to agriculture and dairy farming for their livelihoods and Cottage Grove became known for its creameries and dairy farms. The city of Cottage Grove was settled in the 1840s with the creation of two villages, Langdon and Old Cottage Grove.

Today, Cottage Grove is a growing suburban community located along the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 13 miles from downtown St. Paul. The rural and agricultural landscape of the past has given way to a residential community with a growing manufacturing and retail economy. The City maintains a progressive attitude, and has several business, manufacturing and residential developments in progress or on the horizon.

Cottage Grove boasts many attractive features for families, and families comprise the majority of the population in the community. There are 30 parks and natural areas covering over 1,100 acres of land, including a disc golf course and skate park among the usual features such as picnic areas, ball fields, rinks and courts, and playgrounds. Ravine Regional Park is 450 acres of forest and wetlands including trails for hiking and running. Other recreation options include River Oaks Golf Club and River Oaks Municipal Golf Course, the municipal pool and the ice arena.

The Strawberry Fest Community Round-up is the City's annual summertime festival that features a pageant, bingo, medallion hunt, concerts, pancake breakfast, pet show, sports tournaments, business expo, marching band competition, fireworks display, carnival and more. Much of the area dining is large chain and fast-food; for some variety try Tom Moy Cafe (Chinese) or Las Margarita's. Go to the Red Rock Saloon (Newport) for bowling and bar food.

The area features some very unique architecture and the potential for more if you're looking to build. There are modern and contemporary structures, even a "dome" home prominently featured along the banks of the Mississippi as well as more traditional new colonials and plantation-style revivals, modern walkout ramblers, multi and split-levels. The selections are primarily single-family with some town home and condo options as well.
