Duluth, MN Real Estate

Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin form the northern Twin Cities, actually referred to as the "Twin Ports," located on Lake Superior-the largest freshwater body in the country. The two cities share a harbor and comprise one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes. Among the items shipped are iron ore (taconite) and grain.

As early as 1692, the Hudson Bay Company set up a small post at Fond du Lac. Iron ore mining became a main industry in the area in the middle 1850s along with copper mining. Around the same time, newly-constructed channels and locks in the East permitted large ships access to the area. A road connecting Duluth to the Twin Cities was also constructed and eleven small towns on both sides of the St. Louis River had been formed.

In the late 1860s, financier and railroad mogul Jay Cooke extended the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad from St. Paul to Duluth. The railroad opened areas north and west of Lake Superior to iron ore mining. Duluth's population soared that year. On New Year's Day, 1869, Duluth consisted of fourteen families; by the Fourth of July, 3,500 people were present to celebrate.

With the decline of the city's industrial core in the 1970's, the local economy shifted to tourism. The downtown was renewed with red brick streets, skywalks, and old warehouses along the waterfront converted to cafés, shops, and restaurants, forming the waterfront Canal Park.

Today, Duluth is a largely settled city with 10 well-developed neighborhoods within the city limits. Duluth is the regional hub for its own immediate area, but also for a larger section of northeastern Minnesota, northwestern Wisconsin, and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It remains a major transportation center for the transshipment of coal, taconite, and agricultural products.

A major portion of Duluth's neighborhoods, including the University of Minnesota-Duluth campus, are located atop a large hillside, affording both beautiful views but also very steep streets. Perhaps the most rapidly developing part of the city is a commercial mall and big-box retailer "over the hill," the Miller Trunk corridor including Miller Hill Mall.

There are many things to do in Duluth. In addition to the beautiful Northwoods countryside surrounding the city, there is the historic and storied Glensheen Mansion and estates, the Aerial Lift Bridge, spanning the short canal into Duluth's harbor (a hallmark of the City). Museums include the Duluth Art Institute at the Duluth Depot, the Tweed Museum of Art at the U of M, and smaller local art galleries scattered around the city. Duluth is also home to a professional ballet company and the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

The city celebrates the Homegrown Music Festival the first week in May each year. Started in 1998, the festival features over 130 local musical acts performing across the city. There's also the Lake Superior Zoo and annual Grandma's Marathon that brings thousands of runners and spectators to the City for one weekend in June.
