Eagan, MN Real Estate

Like many nearby communities, Eagan occupies what was once Sioux territory. Around 1740 a small Sioux settlement named "Black Dog Village" comprised of Indians from the Lake Mille Lacs area who had been forced from their land, formed near the Minnesota River at what is currently the Burnsville/Eagan border, Black Dog Road. This was a prime location as it was adjacent to several nearby trading posts.

The first European settlers arrived in the 1850s and were primarily of Irish, German, or French-Canadian heritage. Eagan remained fairly quiet until the 1950s and the advent of the Interstate highway, bringing more people to the area faster than ever before. Eagan now sits on top of roaring Interstate 35E, one of the main transportation channels in the east metro. Eagan just recently received her "city" status in 1972.

Eagan was placed on the map by Money Magazine in 2006 when it was named the 12th Best Place to Live. In general, this is a young, prosperous, and rapidly growing community. Leaders recognize the need for careful land use planning, resulting in lovely, upscale residential areas, numerous outdoor recreation opportunities and quality commercial and industrial development.

The city of Eagan is also closely associated with the Thomson West Corporation (formerly West Publishing), a multi-billion dollar publishing company looking to expand its Eagan campus in the near future by adding several thousand jobs, additional buildings and roads, thereby further enhancing the local economy.

Eagan is generally considered to be a highly prosperous, upscale community with lots of open space dotted with new, high end multiple-level homes with all the amenities sitting atop lush and manicured properties. There's really no reason to "rough it" in Eagan and quite frankly, not many residents do! Eagan is a short 25 minute drive to Minneapolis, 15 minutes to St. Paul, with an ever-expanding public transit system that offers residents express access to both Downtowns. The landscape is picturesque, more hilly than many areas north of the Minnesota river, making for some great views of the Minneapolis and St. Paul skylines; and wooded areas and wetlands have largely been preserved when possible.
