Edina Real Estate

Edina began as a small farming and milling community in the 1860s comprised mostly of Scottish immigrants. The city's name was adopted from the local mill, "Edina Mill" so-named to honor the owner's native town of Edinborough, Scotland. Both the Scottish heritage and the farming/milling framework of the community remain prevalent in the names of buildings, parks and streets within the community, but the humility of that era has long been erased from this city's makeup.

Edina is a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, situated just southwest of the city. The neighborhoods are considered upscale by area standards, with more attention focused on architectural and landscaping splendor than many homes in neighboring first-ring suburbs whose features tend more towards the functional. Homes range from the single-story rambler to modern luxury town home to Tudor Revivals and Modern and Contemporary mansions in some of the most posh developments. Neighborhoods are safe and well-maintained with wide roads and plenty of living space. Retail centers of the city are equally impressive, Edina being home to the first enclosed mall in the country: Southdale Mall, which recently underwent a major upgrade and rejuvenation, as well as the adjacent Galleria ("Shoppes of Distinction"), and the more off-beat and trendy 50th and France district.

Edina is close to everywhere of consequence: Downtown Minneapolis, Uptown, the Mall of America and the Minneapolis International Airport are all a quick 10 to 15-minute drive.

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: The Good Earth-an organic, healthy and vegetarian-friendly establishment with mouth-watering offerings, the type of place where one could order a side of sprouts and the server wouldn't bat an eyelash. Bring a group of friends to Cheesecake Factory for their huge portions and novel-sized menu--oh, and the dessert! Or Maggiano's where you can enjoy family-style all-you-can-eat Italian in your own, private dining room!

Area Shopping: The Galleria offers upscale: Williams Sonoma, Coach, Tiffany and Co.; and unique shopping: Three Rooms art shop, and Papyrus.

Around Town: Take a cooking class at Cooks of Crocus Hill at 50th and France and while you're there, peruse the unique and trendy shops or relax and pamper yourself at chic Spalon Montage. Check out the Edina Art Fair-one of the largest and most well-attended art festivals in the state. If outdoor, family recreation is more your speed, spend a day at the outdoor Tri-City Skate Park located adjacent to the Southdale YMCA. In the winter months, go ice-skating at Centennial Lakes pond or take advantage of golf, walking paths, a band shell and picnic area in this centrally-located park. Finally, to really feel like a local, don your plaid and schedule a tee-time at the ultra exclusive and well-manicured Edina Country Club.

Local Lingo: Made famous in the Emilio Estevez "Mighty Ducks" movies, a "cake-eater" is an Edina native, someone presumed to be of a certain social class and attitude merely based on the fact that they're from the city of Edina. This term is used by residents of rival cities, principally Richfield and Bloomington.
