Ham Lake, MN Real Estate

Ham Lake is a country-side community nestled among towering pines and abundant wetlands located about 25 miles due-north of the Twin Cities. First settled in 1855, a fire tore across the prairie two years later and destroyed all the homes that were part of the burgeoning Scottish community of Glen Cary. After the tragedy, those families all moved away and the area was re-settled by Scandinavians who found it difficult to pronounce the name of the town, so they re-named it "Ham Lake, " after the nearby lake shaped like a ham. Ham Lake became a city in 1974. The main thoroughfare in the area is Highway 65 and the city's closest urban areas are the cities of Anoka, Blaine and Coon Rapids, but Minneapolis is still just an easy half-hour drive away.

Ham Lake is replete with traditional post-World War II ramblers and split-levels, as well as the site of many new, shiny subdivisions; lots are never smaller than one acre, assuring plenty of space to go around. Young families and older adults take advantage of the city's 23 parks and area lakes with opportunities for hiking, running, biking, horseback riding and boating.

Seniors enjoy a peaceful retirement and a lively atmosphere within the community, thanks in large part to the Ham Lake Senior Center and their many activities including antiques shows, ice fishing contests, rummage sales and special dinners such as a lutefisk lefse dinner. Don't worry, contrary to popular belief, you can be a "true" Minnesotan and never have ingested lutefisk! Seniors might also enjoy taking advantage of opportunities to socialize informally at the local VFW and American Legion.

People of any age will enjoy a visit to historic Soderquist's Market, a general store originally opened in 1926 by one of those Scandinavian settlers, a Swede named Iver. The market has been passed down through several generations and is in operation today mainly as a supermarket. If the kids are restless on a hot, summer day pile everyone into the car (even the neighbor kids, since that's just how people are in this small-town community) and head down to Coon Rapids to enjoy the wave pool at Bunker Hills Park. For a break from the chain dining grind, step into Carol's Restaurant (Blaine) for some down-home cooking like Mom, Dad (for those post-modern self-actualized individuals), or Grandma used to make!
