Jordan, MN Real Estate

The city of Jordan is located along Highway 169, about 36 miles southwest of the Twin Cities. On November 27, 1853, Thomas A. Holmes sent a crew of men from Shakopee to build a saw mill. By the late 1850's, Jordan had a hotel, churches, school, tavern, post office, two mills, and a number of new homes. The village remained nameless for several years. It was later said to be named after the River Jordan as referenced in the Bible. In 1872, Jordan City and Brentwood were incorporated together under the name of the village of Jordan. Soon, general stores, breweries, hardware stores and additional churches were built.

By 1880, the village was thriving around two railways and area businesses included two flour mills, two breweries, a stone quarry, a lumber shop, a harness shop, a blacksmith, gunsmith, baker, boot and shoe store, three general merchandise stores, two hardware stores, two grocery stores, two millinery, two meat markets, two jewelers, two hotels, and eight saloons. Jordan was incorporated as a city in 1891.

Today, Jordan is growing right along with the greater metro area and particularly the southwest region located along the Highway 169 corridor. Downtown Jordan offers many unique shops and some eateries along historic Water and Broadway Streets. Jordan and the surrounding area is home to two of the Twin Cities' premiere golf courses: the Ridges at Sand Creek and Valley View Golf Course in nearby Belle Plaine. Each course provides full dining and banquet facilities as well as excellent golfing. The Jordan area is home to many orchards, including Minnesota Harvest Apple Orchard and corn maze, and Dreamy Hills Day Camp.

Heimatfest ("Home Fest") is Jordan's annual community festival that pays homage to its German heritage and features events like royalty coronation, horse shoe contest and a volleyball tournament, games and rides for younger kids and a beer garden for the older "kids." The Scott County Fair is also staged nearby. Attractions include a carnival, draft horse shows, stock dog challenge, horse competitions in dressage, Western horsemanship and barrel racing, amateur talent show, helicopter rides, beer garden, grand stand events and Sunday night fireworks. Valley Fair, Mystic Lake Casino, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and Murphy's Landing (historic town) are also located nearby, offering a range of cultural, family-friendly and adult getaway recreation.

Jordan remains a quintessential small town that's being pressed forward by the progress and urban sprawl of the larger metro area. Many older residences are still maintained today, including turn of the century farmhouses in established neighborhoods. They exist alongside recently-developed models with a steady stream of residential subdivisions continuing to breaking ground near Jordan each year. Despite the nearby recreational opportunities, Jordan maintains a quiet, small-town atmosphere.
