Lakeville, MN Real Estate

Lakeville is considered an "outer ring" suburb of Minneapolis. Approximately 30 minutes from the big city, Lakeville is the fastest growing city in Dakota county, recently adding a second full-sized high school to its roster when other suburbs closer to the metro area are closing schools. Lakeville began as an agricultural center. In 1855, J.J. Brackett officially chose the site for the town and named it after "Prairie Lake" which is now "Lake Marion," renamed after Colonel Marion Savage, owner of Dan Patch and namesake of nearby Savage, MN. Lakeville still boasts several large farm operations with the primary crops being corn, soybeans and dairy cattle.

Besides farming, Lakeville offers a surprisingly diverse selection of cultural options and activities for everyone from the "senior" to the youngest members of the family. The Lakeville Area Arts Center maintains exhibit space and hosts theater performances in an historic building, the old "All Saints Church." If you want to participate in the fun, you can sign up for an art class at the center.

The Lakeville Senior Center is a thriving community that charges a nominal fee for participation, but offers a wide array of activities from health and fitness, to trips and excursions to educational programs, ensuring you stay active and engaged in your later years. Kids programming really comes alive in the summer with a wide variety of summer day camps offered by the city in local parks and recreation facilities. And Pan-O-Prog (Panorama on Progress) is the city's summer festival, run in conjunction with the Fourth of July, and featuring the usual fare: tournaments, pageants, battle of the bands, cookouts, orchestra in the parks concerts, craft fair, street dance, pet and talent show and a medallion hunt.

Lakeville residents enjoy a vibrant outdoors lifestyle, with 53 community and neighborhood parks and over 60 miles of pedestrian and bike trails, there's never an excuse to slow down! Lake Marion and Orchard Lake are the premier water attractions, featuring swimming beaches, fishing spots, conservation areas and picnic shelters. The Iron man Bike Tour, a recreational bike ride, runs through Lakeville (and around and out and back, depending on whether you're doing the 30-miles, 68-mile, or 100-mile ride).

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: The Chart House (on Lake Kingsely), Babe's Sports Bar and Grill, Tacoville, The Buckboard Restaurant, Harry's Café.

Area Shopping: The closest Mall is Lakeville Center. One of the major draws for the horse and farming community and city folk alike is the Mills Fleet Farm on 35E (no kidding-whether it's cheap candy or Dickies coveralls, they've got it all), and right next door, drool over some hogs at the Harley Davidson Store.

Around Town: Hang out at the hip Mainstreet Coffee Café; get your young horse-enthusiast signed up for lessons at one of many local stables, Pumpkin Creek Ranch, for example.

Local Lingo: The public water dispenser is known as a "drinking fountain" and not a "bubbler" as it's commonly referred to across the border in Wisconsin.
