Long Lake, MN Real Estate

Long Lake was first settled in 1855 and was known as Cumberland Town. It consisted of a saw mill, general store and schoolhouse. The late 1890's to early 1900's became known as the "berry years" in Long Lake. In 1898, The Minnesota Fruit Growers Association was established in Long Lake to focus on strawberry and raspberry production. These products became a regional specialty and shipped as far as Fargo and Grand Forks (North Dakota).

In the 1920's, the Buckhorn Cafe was built and quickly became an infamous community meeting place. It was during this time that agriculture was phased out of the Long Lake economy and service industry phased in. Agriculture production facilities were closed to make room for consumer-oriented services such as the Buckhorn Cafe and car repair shops. Long Lake also served as a summer destination for people in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Even today, Long Lake remains a commercial hub in a predominantly rural area.

Long Lake is located about 16 miles west of Minneapolis, an easy commute for work or play. There's much to do in Long Lake and neighboring cities. Either go to bustling Lake Minnetonka and enjoy all the commerce and congestion in that area, or head towards Long Lake, a quieter retreat. The West Hennepin Pioneer Museum is located in Long Lake and contains interesting artifacts from the pioneer days.

The closest mall is Ridgedale Center in Minnetonka and is one of the area's premier malls. Outdoor recreation is in abundance even off the lake, Orono Golf Course, Longhill Country Club, and Spring Hill Golf Course await you. And nearby in Orono is Baker Park Reserve (2,700 acres), providing access to Lake Independence, boat launches, picnic areas, an 11,000 square foot creative play area, snowmobile trails, hiking trails, campgrounds, a wilderness settlement, winter camping and snowshoeing. There are four city and neighborhood parks in Long Lake and the Luce Line, a rails-to-trails hiking and biking trail, runs just south of the city.

Get your grub at several lovely establishments within the city limits, Ravello is a warm, gracious establishment where you can taste the best seasonal Italian and Mediterranean inspired dishes accompanied by an exceptional bottle of wine. Try the gnocchi with pancetta and asparagus or the braised short ribs under Guinness glaze. To sate your sweet tooth or order a cake for that special occasion, check out the Country Cake Cupboard, located in a home-come-bakery in Long Lake. Their European-style cakes are widely acclaimed as much as works of art, as for their buttery, melt-in-your-mouth flavor.

There are many awe-inspiring and modest but warm and well-maintained homes in Long Lake. You'll find smaller lots than in neighboring Orono, but more multi-family and moderately priced options. The shore boasts Modern and Contemporary palatial estates as well as luxurious, customizable lakeside town homes. Once you're off the lake, homes are more moderately priced and include single-story ramblers, split and multi-levels in mature neighborhoods.
