Mankato, MN Real Estate

The City of Mankato is located to the south of the Twin Cities, about 80 miles along Highway 169 south. Mankato is situated on a large bend of the Minnesota River at its confluence with the Blue Earth River. Across the river is Mankato's sister city, North Mankato.

Mankato was founded in February 1852 by Parsons King Johnson and Henry Jackson. The city's name comes from the Dakota word, "mahkato" meaning "green-blue earth", likely referencing the blue clay deposits in the region, thought to contain copper by early explorers. Legend has it that the city was supposed to be named "Mahkato," but a typographical error by a clerk established the name as it stands today. An interesting side note: "Mankato" in the Dakota language means "blue skunk."

Mankato's claim to fame is as the "big city" in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series, where characters would travel to obtain supplies. Mankato also served as the basis for the "Deep Valley" of Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series of children's books and novels.

Mankato may be best-known among Minnesotans for its post-secondary education facilities, namely Minnesota State University (formerly Mankato State); additionally, there's Bethany Lutheran College, Rasmussen Business College, and South Central College, North Mankato.

Mankato is renowned for its great parks and trails that take advantage of numerous rivers, lakes, ravines, bluffs, natural prairies and forested areas and comprise more than 900 acres of land. The expansive Tourtellotte Pool and surrounding park includes picnic shelters equipped with electricity, grills, playground equipment, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and a softball diamond.

Mankato offers activities for people of all ages and interests. The Civic Center has hosted nationally touring ice shows, music concerts and theatre productions as well as supporting local events. Community sports and education opportunities abound in Mankato for people of all ages and education is central to the area's quality of life and economy.

Mankato was recently named one of the nation's 100 "Best Communities for Young People" by America's Promise for the second consecutive year, a great honor given its post-secondary institutions. Mankato residents enjoy the convenience of a larger city and the peace of mind and quality of life often associated with smaller towns.
