Minnetonka, MN Real Estate

The Dakota and Ojibway Indians were the first people to settle in the area now known as Minnetonka. The first European settlers of Irish, Scandinavian and Czech heritage made their way to the area around 1822 from Fort Snelling. Most of the first settlers to the area were farmers, with a few residents working in the nearby mill and furniture factory.

Future industry would consist of a flour mill, grist mill, raspberry farming and commerce, and various services such as a bank, hotel and post office. Minnetonka saw population growth as train service to Hopkins and Minneapolis became more convenient but really saw a boom when streetcar service to those areas began in 1905. Minnetonka became a city in 1969.

Minnetonka is a well-planned, organized and thriving community located about 13 miles west of Minneapolis, beside beautiful Lake Minnetonka. The city offers community-wide events throughout the year, including music in the park all summer as well as summer and fall festivals, community education classes and youth and adult sports leagues and fitness classes. There are trips, events and classes geared towards seniors. Minnetonka maintains five community parks and 44 neighborhood parks including 17 athletic fields, 10 hockey and 10 pleasure skating rinks in the winter, and 81 miles of trails.

Minnetonka is a great upscale community in which to settle or start a family, or relocate as a young professional. There are plenty of family-friendly opportunities to keep children and parents involved in the community, and numerous dining, entertainment and recreation options as well as proximity to downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul to appeal to a person trying to maintain a social and active lifestyle.

Homes in the area range from magnificent lakeside properties, contemporary and modern, and colonial revival styles among some of the more classic multi-levels and ramblers. Luxurious condos and town homes are widely available, as are properties in housing subdivisions and more established neighborhoods. There are some starter homes to fit a more modest budget, but still allow all the amenities of living in this wonderful community.

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: Curl up to a glass of sake, bite of sushi, or traditional Japanese dish at Origami (Ridgedale Mall). Dock your boat at Maynard's in Excelsior in the summertime and enjoy some fish and chips or libations from the patio bar. This is definitely the suburban social scene on steamy Minnesota evenings.

Area Shopping: Ridgedale Shopping Center offers dining, entertainment and stores galore; The General Store of Minnetonka is a great little gift shop that you'll miss if you're not looking carefully-located along Highway 7, this store has a constantly rotating stock of unique and clever gift items.

Around Town: HIT THE WATER! Go fishing, take the family out for a cruise around the perimeter or charter a boat, soak up the sun on a beach or get some friends together for beach volleyball-just don't be caught dead in a library with a book on a sunny day in July!
