Monticello, MN Real Estate

Monticello (pronounced "mont-i-sell-o") is a community located 39 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, along Interstate 94 and the Mississippi River. The community is recognized as home to Nuclear Management Company's Monticello Nuclear Generation Plant as well as a large population of Trumpeter Swans. Each winter, hundreds of trumpeter swans nest near Mississippi Drive Park in Monticello. The Monticello Nuclear Generation Plant heats the Mississippi River water here.

Monticello was founded in 1856. The name "Monticello" is Italian for "Little Mountain." The area anticipates rapid population growth in coming years. Since 2002, several retail outlets have been developed, including a Wal-Mart Supercenter, a Super Target store, a Muller Family Movie Theatre, The Home Depot, Applebee's, Taco John's and an Arby's, helping the community attain a more suburban feel.

This planned growth has also brought new auto dealerships, hotels, and industrial development. Monticello continues to attract new business opportunities. Through a 2004 annexation agreement with Monticello Township, Minnesota is expected to help sustain Monticello's growth for the next twenty years. Presently, the largest employers in the area are the school district, Xcel Energy, Sunny Fresh Foods Inc., Monticello-Big Lake Hospital and Ultra Machining Company.

Monticello has many natural amenities to offer its residents including walking trails and community parks, and an extensive community center that features farmers' market, pool and water slide, fitness area, indoor play area, gymnasium, indoor track, climbing wall, teen center, drop-in childcare, meeting rooms, party room and banquet hall. Monticello, Minnesota is a growing community with a small-town feel.

Area Shopping: Downtown Monticello features a "main street" shopping venue in addition to recent big-box retailers that have come to the area.

Around Town: Annual community events include Riverfest and Art in the Park; also, swan viewing near Mississippi Drive Park during the peak months of mid-November through the end of February. A resident on Mississippi Drive feeds the swans daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with nearly 1,200 pounds of cracked corn each day. There's also Silver Springs Golf Club and the Monticello Country Club for the golfing enthusiast.
