Mound, MN Real Estate

The cities of Mound, Westonka and Spring Park are all closely-intertwined with residents crossing school, community, and geographical boundaries to go about their daily business. Though never permanent settlers in the area, the Dakota Indians lived along the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, at Lake Calhoun, and Shakopee, and often traveled to Lake Minnetonka to hunt, fish and to gather wild rice, roots, and berries.

Mound derived its name from the Indian mounds once found within the city limits. They were not built by the Dakota Indians but were likely created by prehistoric Indians. Mound's recent past was as a resort town, with folks from the city setting up cabin getaways around the lakes, much like they still do in much more remote northern locations today.

Located about 20 minutes west of Downtown Minneapolis, Mound is the birth place of the Tonka truck (named after Lake Minnetonka) as well as Hercules--well, Kevin Sorbo from the TV series. Lakes in Mound include: Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, Seton Lake, and of course, Lake Minnetonka and comprise a full 38 percent of the town. These lakes geographically define the city more so than would a logical sense of north-south-east-west direction.

Winding streets and a lake at every turn have led generations of Mound residents to create names like Phelps Island, Three Points, Shirley Hills, Grandview Boulevard and The Highlands to describe their neighborhoods. These cities are definitely family-oriented as well as conducive for the single and unattached. A family might enjoy a quiet afternoon of fishing on the lake, while a group of friends might take in some drinks and the view on the deck at Lord Fletcher's.

From style to size to budget, there is a wide selection of homes in the Mound, Westonka, Spring Park area for almost any family or individual and most are situated near one of the cities' numerous neighborhood parks. The area is comprised mostly of single-family homes with a smattering of multi-family and town homes thrown in for good measure.

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: Lord Fletcher's(Spring Park): Olde English ambience, Tudor-style building on Lake Minnetonka featuring four dining areas with varying menus offering upscale or casual dining, bar, and patio with lake view.

Area Shopping: Mound Mall, various strip malls; closest large mall: Ridgedale Shopping Center (Minnetonka).

Around Town: Al and Alma's Supper Club and Charter Fleet (Spring Park, ports in Wayzata and Excelsior); charter a dinner cruise for a family party or work function and take in the view of the beautiful homes around Lake Minnetonka, a lovely sunset and gentle lake breeze while enjoying a great meal.

Local Lingo: Fargo is actually located in NORTH DAKOTA, a fact that is consistently overlooked when people make reference to a "Minnesota accent" and then proceed to invoke the accent used in the 1996 movie, "Fargo," (written and directed by Joel Cohen, a St. Louis Park, MN native).
