Mounds View, MN Real Estate

Around 1858 loggers, mill hands, and trappers began settling in the area now known as Mounds View. The name came, quite simply from the "strange and awesome" mounds of sand and gravel in the northwest corner of the community, mounds high enough to be seen from almost anywhere in the township and from much of Anoka County. Today, the mounds are nearly gone, corroded away by nature and the demands of World War II when the area became an important small arms arsenal (remnants in the inactive Twin Cities Army Ammunitions Plant).

Only a few weathered hills remain today. Developers started to realize the possibilities for suburban housing in Mounds View Township in 1938 and by September of 1939, there were 45 new homes in Knollwood Park. In 1951 Mounds View lost over 6,120 acres and 2,000 people to the village of Arden Hills. This trend would continue until 1957 when plans got underway to incorporate the balance of Mounds View Township. Mounds View became a city in 1973.

This city is witness and benefactor to an interesting situation of "undevelopment" taking place next door. With the ammunitions plant no longer in demand (on "layaway"), the Army is handing control of the land surrounding the plant back to the regional Park Reserve, in the hopes that some of the over 2,300 acres can be incorporated into the Rice Creek Trail Corridor. As this process develops, this will be a big boon to the area wetlands and woodlands as well as for residents who wish to take advantage. For those inclined to more "civilized" recreation, there's Brightwood Golf Course or Bridges Golf Course, or the Mounds View Community Theater program where they're always eager to exploit and use your talents!

The residential community of Mounds View is located just 13 miles northeast of Minneapolis, up Interstate 35W. Mounds View is a typical Minneapolis suburb with an array of housing options, from single to multi-family homes, new subdivision ramblers and multi-levels to post World War II models with upgrades and great starter homes and homes that want a little extra attention. More town homes and condos are being built as the entire metro area is seeing an increased demand for this low-maintenance, comfortable option from both young professionals and the growing retired population. You'll find some very cozy, established communities in Mounds View, as well as some newer areas.

Stay within city limits for fast food and chain dining, but head east a few miles to North Oaks and you won't be disappointed: Taste of Scandinavia features food to go or dine in: Swedish limpa bread and dark ryes, pumpernickel and wheat-nut, layer cakes and Finnish cinnamon pulla and even salads entice the senses. If you're a straightforward steak-and-potatoes kind of guy (or girl), you'll be better served at Mounds View Best Steak House--where the meal is as simple and straightforward as the bill at the end of the night!
