New Brighton, MN Real Estate

New Brighton has an illustrious past. The area was first inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibway Indians who traveled the area on rice harvesting treks. The formation of the Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing Company in 1888 was a key development in the city's history that helped shape its identity for years to come. A number of slaughter houses, rendering works, and hide houses sprung up in what was to become the "Butcher's Spur" area. Other industry at the time included the Harris Forge and Rolling Company, operating two iron rolling mills, the Marston Business Block, and the Merriam-Barrrows lumber office and yards.

Numerous hotels were erected, the most prominent being the four-story brick Cattlemen's Hotel, later called the Exchange Building. Several suspicious fires and competition from upstart South St. Paul led to the demise of the cattle industry in New Brighton and the community later turned to farming. The city was named after Brighton, Massachusetts, which, in turn, was probably named after Brighton England. In appreciation of their city's past, New Brighton residents hold an annual Stockyard Days festival that includes a parade and fireworks among the many events.

New Brighton is located ten miles north of Minneapolis on Interstate 694, giving residents access to the northern suburbs along that main freeway corridor, as well as an unobstructed commute to Downtown Minneapolis via Interstate 35W. Rice Creek West Regional Park and Long Lake make this area unique and beautiful, providing residents' access to natural areas and water recreation. The city has an active community programming curriculum with opportunities for young children, youth, teens and older adults.

As with many of the cities in this region, there are some mouth-watering estates located around Long Lake. Some of these homes, feature amenities like boathouses and yards that go right to the shoreline. If you'd rather polish your 9-iron than tune up your jet ski, you'll find luxurious, executive grade homes just a short golf cart ride away from picturesque Brightwood Golf Course. Colonial and Victorian revivals, modern and contemporary homes dot the neighborhoods, as do the more modest multi-levels and ramblers. Condos and townhouses are becoming more prominent, and there's a nice mix of new subdivisions as well as more settled areas-the suburban "grid" effect.

New Brighton certainly features an array of shopping convenience; get your dry cleaning done, browse a bookstore, get your java jolt and a bottle of red to go with dinner tonight and get your grocery shopping done without moving your car. For a break from the abundant fast food and chain dining, hit up Barley John's Brewpub, decorated with stained glass, murals, handmade bar and tabletops and dark wood accents, this place maintains an English pub elegance. The creative menu includes: grilled tempeh kabobs, beer brats, pork chops and grilled pizzas and of course, an exhaustive list of brewed on-site and imported ales and in-season beer.
