New Prague, MN Real Estate

New Prague (pronounced "Pray-g") is located 45 miles southwest of Minneapolis and is named after Prague, the capitol of the Czech Republic. The city and surrounding area reflects the Czech origins of many of the first settlers.

Anton Philipp, a Bavarian, was the first settler to arrive in New Prague in 1856 . When he arrived in St. Paul, Philipp learned that the best lands in the Minnesota Valley were already occupied, but the territory south of Shakopee held great promise. A few months later Albert Vrtis, a Bohemian settler, journeyed up the Mississippi towards St. Cloud, but took a wrong turn at Fort Snelling and were re-routed towards Phillips' settlement where they remained. Early industry was primarily dairy farming and an association was formed. New Prague has a bright history as a creative and enterprising community, starting several businesses that are huge successes today.

The New Prague Flour Mill was established in 1896 and evolved into an international business known as "International Milling," currently part of the ConAgra conglomerate, which produces two well-known brands of flour, Seal of Minnesota and Robin Hood. Begun by a group of interested farmers in September 1925, The New Prague Cooperative Company was a farmer's organization for dealing in petroleum products, wholesale and retail; the first sale was made January 26, 1926. Over the years it has expanded from agricultural products into the wide variety of services known as Minnesota Valley Ag Co-op.

The Minnesota Valley Breeders Cooperative began as an artificial insemination business for purposes of improving herd production in the area. The company was the first in the area to build sealed silos known as "Harvestore," becoming the sale agency. Later, the business became "Midwest Breeders," and is currently called the "21st Century Genetics/CRI and 21st Century Farm Systems."

Today, the City of New Prague is a growing community with a strong appreciation for its illustrious past as well as a progressive attitude towards future growth with new business development in the works as well as residential subdivisions. The area maintains a quaint "main street" shopping area that includes stores such as a scrapbooking store, pet shop and antiques shops among some eateries and coffee shops. A recently completed fitness center gives residents another option for fitness. There are currently twelve community parks offering a variety of amenities such as playground equipment, picnic areas, ball fields, trails for biking and running, and natural areas. New Prague hosts a half-marathon each May through its lovely neighborhoods, parks and downtown area.

New Prague's annual community festival is patterned after a Czech celebration of the bountiful harvest called "Dožínky" (doe-shink'-key). In New Prague, most of the downtown portion of main street is shut down to host people, food, games, and entertainment for a day. New Prague is a community continuing to develop its identity and would be a very nice place for a family to put down roots.
