North Oaks, MN Real Estate

The city of North Oaks is a primarily upscale residential community. It all began in 1883, when railroad magnate and experimental farmer James J. Hill bought 3,500 acres of farmland in Moundsview and White Bear townships. Hill established his farm as a way of supporting the Great Northern Railroad and he founded North Oaks. The farm boasted more than 40 buildings and 400 employees. Today, only the dairy, granary, root cellar and blacksmith shop remain and have been fully restored by. North Oaks became a city in 1957 and is located about 15 miles north of the Twin Cities.

North Oaks' prosperity continued through the 1970s as many corporate executives brought their families to North Oaks-this helped the community earn somewhat of a reputation of exclusivity. As that population has aged, they've remained in the area and the now empty-nesters have created demand for housing with less responsibility, such as senior town home subdivisions and condos. Attracted to the convenience and good quality of life, young professionals are also creating demand in the city's housing market today as are young families seeking a safe and healthy environment in which to raise children.

The partially-restored North Oaks Hill Farm is now a National Historic Site. It spans 620 acres of the city and is designated as a natural conservation area and the city itself is a wildlife refuge. North Oaks hosts an annual community fair and this includes a parade in which all residents are invited to participate, a carnival and 10K run.

You might have to go to neighboring Vadnais Heights or White Bear Lake for a full array of dining and shopping options. But Tria is a cozy local bistro featuring subdued lighting and three large fireplaces. The American menu is seasonal and could include deer, duck or fish.

Homes here can be simply described as breathtaking. Many are located around some of the numerous lakes in the area such as Gilfillan Lake. Styles range from traditional ramblers to prairie style contemporary designs to cabins and multi-levels. Many properties can actually be considered estates and include wooded or wetland areas, or shoreline and lots of space and privacy. This is a lovely area that's preserved its origins as a very special and upscale community!
