North St. Paul, MN Real Estate

North St. Paul might more accurately be named Northeast St. Paul as it's located about 10 miles northeast of St. Paul, up Interstate 35E and over on Highway 36.

The city was founded in 1870 by Henry A. Castle. He began his community, which he called Castle Site, along the shores of beautiful Silver Lake (not the same Silver Lake located in St. Anthony). Castle's vision for the City was a community combining commercial and industrial initiatives with the peace and quiet of shaded, residential areas, a balanced atmosphere for work and play.

Today, residents of North St. Paul would tell you they feel as though Castle's idyllic balance for work and play has largely been attained. On the "Play" side, North St. Paul sponsors a number of community events throughout the year: Crazy Days, Friday Night History Cruz, Historical Society Ice Cream Social, Fall Roundup, Fire Department Booya, Fire Department sponsored Halloween Party, Home & Garden Show, Coin Carnival, Detour Days, and Snow Frolics. The North St. Paul Community Center offers fitness facilities as well as programming for youth and adults year-round, and Silver Lake provides many recreational opportunities including swimming and boating in the summer months.

On the "Work" side, North St. Paul features a well-rounded, centrally located, and expanding business district including supermarkets, newspaper, hardware store, drug store, bank, post office, medical center, furniture store, floral shop, library, restaurants, karate school, ceramics shop, antique shops, novelty shop, plus many professional and service facilities.

Homes in North St. Paul are generally in mature, settled neighborhoods. Post-World War II Ramblers, single and multi-levels speckle quaint neighborhoods with wide boulevards and shade trees, making getting around on foot or two-wheels safe and easy. The city is currently breaking ground on a brand new Highway 36 construction project that will likely ease congestion, and possibly revitalize the area further with new business and renewed interest.

The Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: Go to North St. Paul for Porterhouse Steaks and Seafood restaurant-combining a wonderful menu with top-notch service, or head south to St. Paul to one of any number of unique eateries: Elements Cafe located in the Science Museum and affording great panoramic views of the Mississippi River and Harriet Island, or Forepaugh's French eatery located in a converted Victorian mansion.

Area Shopping: Maplewood Mall (Maplewood) offers the best mall shopping in the area.

Around Town: You might feel like you're being "watched" in North St. Paul. The "Snowman" located at the intersection of Highway 36 and Margaret Street was created by former resident Lloyd Koesling. The construction of this "sculpture" started in 1972 and was completed in 1974 by Lloyd and a group of local businessmen, and later presented to the City. The Snowman is 44 feet tall and weighs about 20 tons. It is the World's Largest Stucco Snowman. In 1972, the Snowman was adopted as the official city logo.
