Northfield, MN Real Estate

Northfield, whose city motto is "Cows, colleges and contentment," was founded by John W. North in 1855. The community began as a farming and industrial area with lumber yards and flour mills powered by the Cannon River. The agriculture of Northfield has included both wheat and corn in the past and is currently consumed with the production of corn, soybeans and hogs. Malt-O-Meal, a breakfast cereal maker, is what remains of the milling industry. Northfield is also known as an educational hub as it houses Carleton College and St. Olaf.

Beginning in the 1970s and continuing today, Northfield has felt the ripples of progress as the Twin Cities metro continues to expand and develop. Northfield is located approximately 30 miles south of the Twin Cities and began feeling the progress pinch when Highways 36 and 19 were completed, creating easier access to the community than ever before. With big city conveniences like the Mall of America creeping further south, Northfield is starting to feel more like a suburb of the Twin Cities than a separate metropolitan district.

Development in Northfield has meant that "main street" businesses in downtown Northfield have been replaced by specialty shops. New business to the area reflects the growing needs of a senior market, including The Village on the Cannon, Millstream Commons, and new construction at the Northfield Retirement Center. The city is also developing a mixed-use residential and commercial project along the river on the north edge of downtown. Many of the buildings in downtown Northfield are well-preserved examples of late 19th to early 20th-century architecture.

Because of early economic successes, the stable population and economic influx provided by two thriving colleges and the ability of business owners and entrepreneurs to adapt to changing conditions, Downtown Northfield is an extensive, well-planned and maintained corridor with commercial development continuing on the more spacious southern edge of the city. Northfield is a dynamic, self-contained community with a diverse population of students and professors, families and a few remaining farmers. Northfield will undoubtedly see more development as the boundaries of the Twin Cities metro area grow ever-closer.

Local's Notebook:

Local Flavor: Almost any casual dining and fast food establishment a person would want, also, try James Gang Coffeehouse and Eatery; Chapati--a taste of India and Froggy Bottom's Irish River Pub.

Area Shopping: Historic Downtown district, including Sisters Ugly contemporary clothing, Digs home décor and gifts and a variety of antique shops.

Around Town: With the presence of the two colleges, Northfield maintains a thriving arts and culture community including several visual arts galleries, performing arts at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater and theaters and both Carleton and St. Olaf. During the holidays, the St. Olaf Christmas festival is a nationally-televised event.
