Orono, MN Real Estate

Orono is located about 18 miles west of Minneapolis on Highway 394, on the north shore of Lake Minnetonka. Orono Township was created in 1889-at the height of Lake Minnetonka's boom period. During that time, railroad and trolley cars were creating easier access to the Lake and it's many inlets and bays. Several grand hotels and resorts were built and steamships took passengers on cruises around the lake. This era ended abruptly as the Depression set in. In 1906 an amusement park was built on Big Island, and people would come for miles around to spend a day at the park. Later, a second period of rapid growth began as people sought out the area as both a cabin getaway and a place to reside year-round. The city was incorporated in 1955.

Today, Lake Minnetonka boasts impressive numbers and is a major economic and geographic influence on the communities that settled around her shores. Lake Minnetonka is the tenth largest lake in Minnesota with over 14,000 acres of water (approximately 22 square miles) and over 100 miles of shoreline used for both residential and commercial purposes.

Lake Minnetonka is also the most heavily-trafficked lake in Minnesota. Lake Minnetonka really is the place to be during the dog days of summer. All the metro-area lakes have a different makeup and reputation. Lake Minnetonka could be described as the place to be and be seen. This is where the wealthy and elite dock their watercraft and meander down from their shoreline mansions to sip cold drinks in the sun and entertain on the weekends. However, of all the lakeside communities, Orono is probably the quietest, least high-profile.

Orono's share of the Lake Minnetonka industry includes Casco, Lydiard, and Summit Beaches as well as lake-side parks, numerous marinas and some business and dining options. Orono is also located just south of Baker Park Reserve (2,700 acres) and Lake Independence, with easy access to boat launches, picnic areas, an 11,000 square foot creative play area, snowmobile trails, hiking trails, campgrounds, a wilderness settlement, winter camping and snowshoeing-a nice getaway from the "scene" at the Lake.

Homes here can be quite magnificent with big lots, even some more rural sites with horse or livestock options. The neighborhoods are lush with tall trees and manicured lawns. Ramblers, multi-levels, Victorian and Colonial revivals, chalets and prairie styles are all potential candidates in Orono. Condos and town homes are also an option.

There are several highly elite neighborhoods around Lake Minnetonka or other area lakes, or near the golf courses-in fact, some cruise companies make a living offering cruises around Lake Minnetonka just to view the mansions on the shoreline. The more moderately priced options tend to be inland. Orono is a nice little community in good company. The entire Lake Minnetonka area and surrounding communities are generally considered to be very desirable locations and fairly upscale living.
