Osseo Real Estate

Osseo is a quaint little crook of a community, tucked between the larger, and more commercial cities of Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park, Northwest of the metro area. Main thoroughfares here are County Road 81, and Highway 169. For a brief period, parts of Osseo were under governance of Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove Townships. In 1852, the Osseo broke away and was finally designated an official city in 1972. The name is Native American, "Waseia" meaning either "there is light," or "son of evening star." The community began as a wood market, cutting around 100 cords per day in peak season and sending them to Minneapolis merchants. Original settlers to the area were French, Canadian, German and, of course, Native American.

Today, Osseo possesses a thriving downtown area and commercial business district along County Road 81--an area that will undergo major improvement and expansion in the coming years as a strategic plan for development is already underway. One might be better served to go to neighboring Maple Grove or Brooklyn Park for large retail shopping venues such as the Shoppes at Arbor Lake, but Osseo offers its own selection of unique and specialty stores and restaurants. Lavish is a trendy home décor boutique; make your own beaded trinkets at Beadbury; Kopper Kettle Restaurant boasts a break from "freeze 'n thaw" fare with down-home breakfasts and lunches and a "yesteryear" atmosphere; Country Couzin, is an upbeat and friendly Greek spot where it's not uncommon to see the owners carousing with the regulars; Java Jungle, the local indie coffee house, fosters the poet or artist within and provides free WiFi, as do public spots across the city; and finally, The Osseo Bakery is the place for donuts.

The city offers family-friendly recreation such as movies and concerts in the park in the summer months, and is planning to launch its own farmers' market in 2007. Undoubtedly, the city will continue to expand these opportunities for community gathering and recreation. They already have the trademark city-wide garage sale and an annual Marching Band Festival. Well, 2007 will the first year the festival is held, but everyone has to start somewhere! Osseo residents will benefit from a major Metro Transit improvement plan for the Northwest metro that will be implemented in 2007 and improve access to busses to Downtown Minneapolis.

Many homes here are similar to neighboring Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park; in fact, the sawdust has barely settled on many gorgeous homes and town homes in rambler, split-level and multi-level styles. If it's the eclectic you're looking for, Osseo also maintains many older and well-preserved multi-levels that date back to the early 1900s and ramblers from the sixties. The neighborhoods here are a throwback to the grid-style layout of the metro and south metro neighborhoods, but friendly and inviting nonetheless. This is a dynamic and ever-changing community that is sure to look very different in the coming years.
