Owatonna, MN Real Estate

The city of Owatonna is located 65 miles south of Minneapolis, along Interstate Highway 35W, past Faribault and Northfield. Located at the confluence of multiple rail lines, Owatonna is a mini metropolitan area unto itself. The first white settlers arrived to the area shortly after the 1851 treaties of Traverse des Sioux and Mendota. Owatonna was likely named after the major river running through Steele County, named "Ouitunya" by Native Americans who originally occupied the area.

Today, Owatonna is a lovely, tree-lined city built on the shore of the Straight River. Surrounded by farmland and prairie and full of lush parks and well-maintained trails, Owatonna is a great place to live for people who enjoy outdoor recreation and nature. The city makes sure residents can enjoy the "great outdoors" throughout the year, all four seasons.

There are also a host of indoor activities from bowling to movies, and interesting shopping. Owatonna boasts over 40 industries and 500 retail and professional businesses. Major employers to the City include Viracon, Truth Hardware, SPX Corporation, Wenger Corporation, Cybex, Federation Insurance and Josten's. Owatonna is also proud of their school system that has turned out champions in numerous sports and academic arenas.

Owatonna maintains over 700 acres of parks and walkways in the Owatonna area, comprising 24 parks. One of the most popular areas is Kaplan's Woods Parkway, featuring 225 acres for hiking, biking, jogging, inline skating, and cross-country skiing. Within this scenic landscape, Lake Kohlmier offers a beach facility for swimming, canoeing and docks for fishing. Other city parks feature volleyball, basketball, horseshoe and tennis courts, ball diamonds, inline and ice skating rinks, and play equipment, as well as a bike and inline skate park.

There are also four area golf courses offering a range of difficulty levels for all abilities. In the winter, the Steele County Trail System includes 175 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, connecting five adjoining counties. Outdoor skating and hockey rinks can be found at Morehouse Park and over 11 miles of cross country ski trails can be found at Brooktree Golf Course, Kaplan's Woods Parkway, Morehouse Park and Prairie Park.

Owatonna is a great, self-sustaining, family-friendy community. Residents can conveniently find everything they need in their mini-metro and enjoy an excellent quality of life afforded by a smaller town.
