Pine City, MN Real Estate

Pine City is located 68 miles north of the Twin Cities, 85 miles south of Duluth, along Interstate Highway 35W, situated between Cross Lake and Pokegama Lake. Originally an Ojibwe village along the Snake River, "Pine City" is an English translation of "Chengwatana" (Pine Town). The Ojibwe name for the city is "Ne-zhingwaakokaag" (on a land-point full of white pines). A portion of the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation is located within Pine City.

Pine City was founded in 1881. The Dakota Indians were the first to the area, with the Ojibwa soon to follow, the area became a mix of the two. In the late 1800s, European settlers came to the heavily-forested Pine City area, boasting towering white pines. The arrival of the railroad created an expansion of the harvesting of these pines and the city prospered and grew, eventually providing its farmer-residents with everything they needed.

Today, Pine City is the county seat of Pine County, and a popular day trip for city dwellers that enjoy the historic downtown's specialty stores and restaurants as well as nearby casino, historical sites and recreational opportunities, including the St. Croix River valley. In recent years, the City has seen several new housing developments on the outskirts of the city, housing a substantial population that makes the daily commute to the Twin Cities for work. However, the City has managed to maintain its regional position without becoming a bonified bedroom community.

Pine City houses several diverse industries, light industrial primary among them, then service and agriculture. MINPACK, Inc. is one of the largest employers, followed by Atscott Manufacturing Company. Other large employers in the community include Wal-Mart, Product Fabricators, Inc., ISD 578, Therapeutic Services Agency, Pine County and Lakeside Medical Center. Pine City has recently benefited from some commercial growth near the City's two freeway interchanges, including a Subway restaurant, Wal-Mart SuperCenter, Blockbuster Video, Ace Hardware and Dominos Pizza, Inc.

Pine City has one of the most prominent downtowns in the region. Robinson Park is at the heart of it and essentially forms the town square, with the old train depot to the east, city hall to the south and several local "mom and pop" shops lining 5th Street on the west side of the park. There are many people who live and work in Downtown Pine City. Residents also enjoy three retail shopping centers: Pine Plaza, Evergreen Square and Northridge Center.

Besides convenience and commerce, residents enjoy many events and amenities throughout their community, including an active community theater, a summer concert series held in Robinson Park, the nearby Chengwatana State Forest, Freedom Fest and Art Fest, Pine County Fair, and a historical living interactive site: North West Company Fur Post.

Musical ensembles at Pine City High School are also noted for their excellence and give free performances throughout the school year. Recreation options include many parks and opportunities to take advantage of the water. There are boat and fishing piers, picnic facilities, playground equipment, trails, and a softball park.
