Here is country living at its best. Located 50 miles from Minneapolis and 30 miles from St. Cloud, Princeton offers a charming, small town experience along with the promise of future growth. The main attraction for settlers to this area was the looming White Pine forests, and lumber became the first main industry. The town is named for John Prince, who, in 1850 established the first saw mill in St. Paul to process the Princeton lumber.

As the lumber forests were depleted, the area turned to agriculture, especially wheat and potatoes, and later brick-making (see the town of Brickton a few miles north) and finally dairy in 1908. The same tradition of diversity is alive today in Princeton's industrial park where a range of businesses from a cabinet-maker to a liquor distillery have set up shop, providing employment options close-to-home in this small community. However, the most prominent neighbor might be The Federal Aviation Administration's flight service station and later, the Princeton Municipal Airport.

Big retail can be found in St. Cloud, but Princeton offers a modest selection in its Downtown strip. In the summertime, bring the kids down to Splash Park (in Mark Park), where for a modest admission fee, they can splash around in fountains and other water features all day. Other community parks provide the usual fare: ball fields, tennis courts, barbeque pits, nature areas, boat launches and fishing piers.

Indoor entertainment comes in the form of a bowling alley and Thunder Alley Indoor Speedway and Paintball (probably what Princeton is best-known for). One of the more unique attractions to the area is "Tank Ride," operating out of nearby Morristown. For only $300 you and a friend can take a spin in a real, combat-active World War II tank and fire a machine gun. In Downtown Minneapolis, all you'd get for that kind of money is a swanky dinner for four at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Now that's the kind of recreation Downtown Minneapolis just can't compete with!

Homes in the area range from the simple ramblers in the typical neighborhood grid, to craftsman and chalet styles and log homes. Many properties on the outskirts include outbuildings, so if you're considering housing a horse or two, there would plenty of places to choose from. There's a lot of open space out here and being located on the rapidly developing Highway 169 corridor, it won't be long before Princeton becomes a suburb of either St. Cloud or Minneapolis, whichever sprawls faster!
