Red Wing, MN Real Estate

The area of Red Wing was acquired from the Spanish and French in the Louisiana Purchase. Many famous early missionaries and explorers forged this land, including Father Louis Hennepin and Zebulon Pike.

The name Red Wing, is probably of Native American origin. On one of his visits, Pike met with Chief Hupahuduta, whose name means "a swan's wing dyed in red." The first white settlement was established on the west banks of the Mississippi in 1853, and in 1857 Red Wing was incorporated as a city-one could almost believe that the first B & B (bed and breakfast) was soon to follow!

The city of Red Wing is located in a valley surrounded by looming bluffs, with the Mississippi River to the north flowing past its levee. Neighborhood parks are scattered throughout this City widely hailed as a tourist destination for city-dwellers looking for a weekend getaway.

Red Wing's other leading industry is manufacturing and it's the home of Red Wing Shoes. Other products include pottery, leather, linseed oil, safety products, and robotic products. Red Wing also houses a two-unit (550 megawatts each), nuclear power plant. Surrounding Red Wing is rich agricultural land. Red Wing offers visitors, residents and businesses the warmth of a small community with the convenience of a nearby major metropolitan area.

Natural recreation options abound with Red Wing's riverfront, including winding paths through the beautiful bluffs, bike trails, streets lined with colorful flower baskets and 38 immaculately maintained city and neighborhood parks that include trails, athletic fields, playgrounds, open space, an aquatic center, park pavilions and outdoor skating rinks.

Homes here cover a wide spectrum, from majestic and historic restored Victorian and French Empire mansions to newer ramblers as well as post World War II split-levels. Housing is predominantly single-family with some multi-family units. There is a stock of new town homes and condos near the restored river front district, and a selection of starter homes nestled in established neighborhoods. Red Wing is a very comfortable place to live, with a throwback, small-town feel all the while providing to its residents the natural beauty of its surroundings, conveniences and recreation options of a larger city.
