Redwood Falls is located approximately 112 miles southwest of Minneapolis, along the scenic Minnesota River Valley. It is the county seat of Redwood County and serves as a sub-regional economic hub for residents of Redwood and Renville counties.

Much of current-day Redwood Falls was once located within a 20-mile wide by 75-mile long stretch of Dakota Indian reservation. A corrupted Federal Indian Administration combined with the inability of many Dakota to adjust to change in functional ways created great hardships for the Dakota. In 1862, with U.S. officials distracted by the U.S. Civil War and a growing discontent and increased suffering by the Native Americans forced to remain on the reservation, the Dakota War of 1862 broke out.

As a result of the war, the U.S. government attempted to expel the Dakota people from Minnesota. In 1864, Sam McPhail claimed the land where Redwood Falls is now located. He hired men to use lumber from the Dakota reservation to build a fortified house. The cities of North Redwood and Redwood Falls recently merged and now coexist as the single entity Redwood Falls.

Today, Redwood Falls has a growing and diverse economic base consisting tourism and entertainment, light and heavy manufacturing, high-tech computer component manufacturing, and agriculture industries. In addition to a healthy economy, Redwood Falls' maintains a high quality of life with many civic and service organizations, community events and celebrations, an award-winning school district, excellent park and recreation amenities, and top quality health care providers.
