Robbinsdale, MN Real Estate

Robbinsdale is lovely second-ring suburb located about 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. The first claim to land in the area came in 1852 and the small farming community gradually increased. Local legend has it that in 1887, while passing through the area on a train, Mr. Andrew B. Robbins observed the beautiful land and purchased ninety acres of the choicest with the distinct purpose of making it the site of a suburban town. The summer of 1888 brought the first land boom.

New industry moved into the area, causing friction with local the local farming community, similar to the situation that was occurring in New Hope. The rural residents disapproved of the efforts to invite business into the area and on April 19, 1893, the village of Robbinsdale was organized. Today, Robbinsdale is a primarily settled, residential community with a growing main street business base, regional medical center (North Memorial Medical Center), convenient shopping and dining options, as well as good public transportation and quick access to Minneapolis.

Robbinsdale is generally known for two industries: publishing and pro wrestling. The City has produced an inordinate number of pro wrestlers including: "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, Nikita S. Koloff (Scott Simpson), Barry Darsow (Demolition Axe, REPO Man, etc.), "Ravishing" Rick Rude, Tom Zenk, Verne Gagne and Greg Gagne. The city was also home to Fawcett Publications (established in 1919, publisher of the Whiz Bang books) and still maintains a strong economy of publishing and printing, business writing, web design and graphic design businesses today.

If you're not too busy practicing the "Rude Awakening" or the "Atomic Drop," check out Robbinsdale's annual celebration "Whiz Bang Days," held on the 2nd weekend in July and paying homage to Captain Billy's Whiz Bang books. There is also Crystal Lake to explore as well as 14 parks and 110 acres of parkland to enjoy natural areas, sports fields, picnic areas and playgrounds.

Homes range from beautifully preserved 1930s two-stories, cottages and post World War II ramblers to new, subdivision walkout ramblers. There are town homes and condos, both brand new as well as previously owned with several more developments under consideration for the near future. This is a more established, modest community that seems to have retained some of those old farmers' values of quality over size or quantity, shirking the unnecessary size and luxury of some of the excessive residences you'll find in more upscale communities or in lakeside locales. Homes and properties, while generally older, are well-maintained, clean and cozy and even the most modest models often include timeless features like hard wood floors.
