Rochester, MN Real Estate

Rochester is the third largest city outside of the Twin Cities, comprising its own metropolitan area in the southern portion of the state. Rochester is located 77 miles south of the Twin Cities along the south fork of the Zumbro River. The City is unique for its climate-controlled skyway system as well as subterranean walkways. A variety of shops and businesses are located along these thoroughfares.

Rochester was founded by George Head in 1854 and so-named after Head's hometown, Rochester, New York. In 1857 Rochester was named the Olmsted County seat. Rochester was a stagecoach stop for travelers journeying between St. Paul and Dubuque, Iowa. The railroad arrived in the 1860s, bringing with it new residents and business opportunities. On August 21, 1883, a tornado demolished much of Rochester, leaving thirty-seven dead and several thousand wounded. There was no medical facility at the time, so Dr. William W. Mayo and his two sons worked together to care for the wounded.

The Sisters of St. Francis assisted Dr. Mayo, and with $60,000 in donations Mayo opened a new facility in 1889 named St. Mary's Hospital. The Mayo practice grew and today it is one of the largest and most well-respected medical facilities in the world. Famous people from around the world, including former United States Presidents George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and King Hussein of Jordan, have visited Rochester and checked in to the Mayo Clinic.

The primary industries in Rochester are (not surprisingly) medical services, computer design and programming including a large IBM campus, light manufacturing (mostly computers and electronics), and hospitality services for the many visitors from around the world. Rochester is still home to the Sisters of St. Francis who helped Dr. Mayo so long ago!

Rochester residents enjoy coming home; homes here tend to be upscale and sprawling walkout ranches, brick and stucco Tudors, Modern and Contemporary and Victorians situated on large parcels of land. There are also several new subdivision developments reminiscent of the Twin Cities suburbs. Bungalows and town houses are optimal choices for the more modest buyer. Rochester is a great alternate location to the larger Twin Cities metro area, with a great arts and culture, recreation and dining scene but all on a somewhat smaller scale.
