Rockford, MN Real Estate

Rockford was conceived mostly as a milling settlement around 1855 and gained her name both for the "Big Rock," the Native American name for the fork in the Crow River, and Rockford, Illinois. The city withstood a locust invasion and the Civil War largely due to her abundance of ginseng roots that grew in the deep shade of the thick woodlands.

Settlers were able to sell the roots and practically pay off their farms before the city was even incorporated! Rockford Village was formally incorporated in 1881 and has continued to see population growth as first, the railroad, and then interstate highways connected it to the Twin Cities metro area.

Located approximately 30 miles northwest of Minneapolis, near the Crow River, the population of Rockford continues to grow as commuters find it easier to get to and from work via highway and public transportation, and are drawn to the simplicity of small-town life as well as the friendly, close-knit atmosphere of a community whose main focus is on the local high school football team rather than the myriad of concerns and preoccupations that are conditions of living in a more fast-paced, urban setting.

New housing developments and town homes are a common sight in Rockford, Greenfield, Loretto and Corcoran, as are the ever-present single-story rambler and split level that are often being updated and renovated to reflect more modern tastes.

As anticipated, being surrounded by so much natural beauty, the Crow River, Lake Rebecca and Lake Independence, these communities' emphasis is on outdoor recreation and appreciation of the landscape around them.

The Local's Notebook

Local Flavor: Rockwell's Café (Rockford); Countryside Café, Dobo's (Loretto). The four cities offer a plethora of every type of fast food; in fact, the mayor of Rockford called and personally challenged you to try to find a fast food chain that one of the four cities didn't possess.

Area Shopping: Head west a few miles to nearby Buffalo, MN, an oft-cited holiday shopping pilgrimage for many Minnesotans for a "Main Street America" shopping experience: antique and thrift stores, collectibles, unique gifts and jewelry.

Around Town: Lake Rebecca Park Reserve and Baker Park Reserve on Lake Independence, part of the Three-Rivers Park District. View Trumpeter swans, hiking trails, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, swimming, horse trails, campsites, boat rental, and fishing; Baker National Golf Course. At the end of August, participate in Rockford River Days-a quaint, small-town festival consisting of street dances; parades; softball, baseball and volleyball tournaments; road races; a pork chop feed and carnival.

Local Lingo: The sweet, carbonated beverage you buy from a vending machine is a "pop," not a "soda" or "coke."
