Rosemount, MN Real Estate

Rosemount was originally inhabited by the Lower Band Mdewakanton of the Santee Sioux tribe. The first European-American settlers arrived in 1853 from Scotland via New York, and were closely followed by many Irish Catholic immigrants. The Minnesota Central railroad came to town in 1864 and ran between Mendota and Faribault, paving the way for more residents and business to the area. In 1867 a 40,000-bushel capacity grain elevator was erected in town and helped usher in a new business district. Several hotels were erected in the late 1850s, and the late 1860s saw many new businesses such as the general store, shoe store, blacksmith shop, hardware store, wagon and harness shops, and the publication of the Dakota County Tribune.

The next big development for Rosemount came in 1942, during World War II when the Federal Government acquired 13,000 acres of farmland from the City, displacing 90 families. Construction began on the Gopher Ordinance Works (a munitions plant). The project included 20,000 workers and 856 new buildings at a cost of around $123,855,448. Operations of the plant ceased in 1945 and the University of Minnesota obtained 8,000 acres of the land. Currently, the U of M's Agricultural Research Station and the Dakota County Technical College are located on part of the site. In January of 1971 the village and township of Rosemount merged. Rosemount became a city in 1975.

Today, Rosemount combines industry, agriculture and agricultural research with a rapidly growing residential community. The City is located just 15 miles south of the Twin Cities and the International Airport. The eastern one-third of the City is largely heavy industry including Flint Hills Resources (formerly Koch Refinery), SKB (industrial waste containment facility), Spectro Alloys, and Continental Nitrogen. The western one-third of the City includes businesses such as Greif Brothers (multi-wallbags) and the regional home base for the National Guard. The City also launched an 80-acre business park in 1995 with tenants such as Cannon Equipment, Geometrix, and Webb Business Promotions, Inc. In addition, more than 500 acres of industrial and commercial zoned land have been reserved for future development.

The western part of Rosemount exhibits a dynamic, expanding residential community centering around a mature commercial district. Housing options include more modest single family homes, town homes and condominiums as well as an ever-expanding array of upscale residential subdivisions with hundreds of homes currently under development. This type of growth is anticipated to continue for several years. Presently, the City is considering the first steps towards a downtown revitalization project that will include pedestrian-friendly streets and sidewalks and more mixed-use development.

Rosemount boasts 23 parks on 302 acres. Bordered by the Mississippi River, Rosemount also contains 270 acres of the Spring Lake Regional Park Preserve. There is no shortage of activities with the Community Center, parks and recreation offerings and community-wide events such as the annual Leprechaun Days, paying homage to Rosemount's Irish heritage.
